Why Should You Never Use a Lift During a Fire?

During a fire, never use the lift unless emergency responders specifically instruct you to do so. Instead, use the designated emergency staircase or fire escape route.

  • 🔥 Power can fail suddenly: A lift may stop between floors if the fire disrupts the electrical supply.
  • 🚪 You could become trapped: Smoke, heat, or electrical problems can prevent the lift from operating safely.
  • 💨 Smoke can enter the lift shaft: The shaft can allow smoke and hot gases to spread between floors.
  • ⚠️ The lift may open onto the fire floor: The doors could open where flames or heavy smoke are present.
  • 🛗 Firefighters may need the lift: Emergency personnel may require elevator access for firefighting and rescue operations.

What should you do instead?

Stay calm, leave the building using the designated fire staircase, follow the building’s evacuation instructions, and do not return inside until authorities say it is safe.
